Baklava
Ingredients
- 1 pack of Phylo sheets
- 1/4 lb of butter(1 stick).
- 1 Cup Pistachios or Walnuts
- 2 tbsp of Sugar
- 2 Cardamom
For the syrup
- 1 Cup sugar
- 3/4 cup water
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp orange peels(use 1 tbsp of orange juice, or try Rose water)
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 F. Take a square or rectangular shaped baking tray and cut the
Phyllo
sheets to match the size of the tray. Grease the tray with butter. Melt the remaining butter.
Layer one Phyllo sheet in the tray and brush with butter. Repeat this for 10 sheets.
Coarse grind the pistachios with sugar and add crushed cardamom seeds. Layer the nut mixture on the sheets in the pan. Layer another 10 sheets of Phyllo on the nuts, by applying the butter between each sheets. Apply butter on top. Using a knife cut the assembly into small square or diamond shapes. Bake at 350F for 20 minutes and then at 300 F for 1/2 an hour until the top of the sheets looks golden color,
and leave it to cool down for 5 minutes.
Heat the water and sugar and add lemon juice and orange peels and boil for few minutes and
let it cool down. Pour thin line of syrup between the cut lines in the baklava and leave it to set
for 3-4 hours.
