Chena Vanpayar Erissery -Sadya Special / Red Gram Yam Curry/Chena Erissery

Chena Vanpayar Erisseri / Elephant yam and red gram tampered in roasted coconut
This erisseri is one of our favorite sadya special.Replace yam with pumpkin to make pumpkin erisseri. Mathanga erisseri is little bit sweet in taste. The taste mainly depends on the amount of roasted coconut used, add more for a better taste. I personally recommend coconut oil for this recipe.
Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup red gram ( Vanpayar soaked for 2 to 4 hours)
  • 1 cup chopped yam
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • salt, as needed
  • curry leaves to garnish
  • 1 tbs coconut oil

To grind
  • 3/4 cup fresh grated coconut
  • 2 to 3 green chillies
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 2 to 4 shallots
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds

For seasoning
  • 3/4 cup grated coconut
  • 2 dry red chillies
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • curry leaves
  • 1 tbs coconut oil
  • 2 shallots chopped

Directions

Cook yam adding salt and turmeric powder with enough water. Pressure cook red gram separately  with
turmeric powder up to 3 whistles.  Do not add too much water. Once the red gram and yam are cooked add ground coconut paste, cook for 5 to 10 minutes.till the gravy thickens. Turn off the heat. In another small pan heat 1 tbs coconut oil. Splutter mustard seeds followed by red chillies, curry leaves, and shallots. To this add coconut and fry till almost golden brown, add this tampering to Erisseri and serve with rice.
