Home Made Pav |Bread for Pav Bhaji

Pav Bhaji is a fast food dish in Maharashtra and is very popular in many restaurants around the world. Pav means small bread  and it is  eaten with  bhaji which  is a thick gravy  made with lots of vegetables. Here is the recipe for making the Pav(Bread).

  • 2 cups luke warm water
  • 3.5 gms yeast 1/2 pak)
  • 4 1/2 cups all purpose  flour
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  • 1 egg for egg wash

Add 1 tbsp sugar and yeast to the warm water and mix together. Keep it aside for 10 minutes. Mix together the flour, remaining sugar and salt. Add the flour to the yeast mixture and knead for 2 minutes to form a smooth dough. You may need to add more water or flour to adjust the dough. Continue kneading for 10-12 minutes. keep the dough covered a with a plastic wrap and rest in a warm place for 1 hour. Dough will rise
to about double the original size. Add light coat of butter in a baking sheet and apply flour on top of that. Punch down the dough and knead couple of times. Make large sized balls and keep it in the baking sheet so that each ball just touch each other. Leave the pan covered for 30-45 minutes, dough will rise again and the gaps between the balls would be covered mostly. Apply egg wash(mix together 1 egg and 2 tbsp water)  on top with a brush and Bake at 375 degree C, for 20-25 Minutes.
