Broken Wheat Upma

  • 1 cup broken wheat(i prefer Goya brand)
  • 1/4 cup onions
  • curry leaves
  • 1 whole red chilli
  • salt, as needed
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups water

Wash the wheat thoroughly.Heat oil in a pan splutter mustard seeds,red chilli and curry leaves.Add onions and fry till golden color.Pour 2 cups of water adding pinch of salt, let it boil .Then add wheat,cook covered till ready.(Add less water if wanted dry..)


  1. sounds delicious! I love broken wheat and make pilaf from it to serve with meat dishes.

  2. I also prepare this whenever I'm in a hurry. I also add diced carrots, beans and peas.
