Kerala Cabbage Thoran | Cabbage Stir Fry

Cabbage Thoran

One must side dish in  Kerala sadya, weddings or any family get together. Easy to make with simple ingredients and delicious with hot steaming rice. Do not overcook.


  • 2 cups cabbage, grated
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup grated coconut
  • 1tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • few curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp ginger, grated
  • 2 slit green chillis
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbs coconut oil


In a large bowl combine cabbage, onion,green chillis, turmeric, salt, curry leaves and coconut. Mix well with clean hands. Heat oil in a pan or iron skillet, splutter mustard seeds. Add urad dal and ginger, saute till urad dal turns slightly golden . Add cabbage coconut mixture, close the lid and cook on low flame for about 5 to 8 minutes. Serve with rice or use as stuffing for bread and tacos..
