Kannur Chicken curry / Malabar Chicken curry


What makes Malabar Chicken Curry special is the gravy made with Roasted coconut. In Kannur  and Thalassery areas this chicken curry is served with Malabar Ghee Rice or Bread.


Ingredients
  • 1 lb chicken pieces
  •  few fresh spices (cinnamon stick, bay leaves, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg)
  • 1 onion ,sliced
  • 1 tbs ginger, chopped
  • 1 tbs garlic, chopped
  • 1 tomato
  • 1  tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp chicken masala
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 2 green chillies
  • salt, as needed
  • cilantro, to garnish
  • curry leaves, to garnish
To grind
  • 1/2 cup grated coconuts
  • 1 whole dried red chilli
  • 1 tbs coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • few pepper corns
 Directions
    Marinate the chicken pieces with salt, pepper, chilli powder and little bit of lemon juice or yogurt, set aside
for15 to 30 minutes. Meanwhile dry roast the coconuts till light brown, add  turmeric powder, chilli powder, pepper corn and coriander powder.Cool it and grind to a smooth paste.

   Heat 1 tbs oil in a pan, add few fresh spices.When nice aroma appears add chilli powder, coriander powder and chicken masala. Saute till raw smell goes away. Add ginger, garlics, green chillies onions and tomatoes.. Saute for 2 to 5  minutes.To this add marinated chicken pieces. Cook covered without adding water.When the chicken is half cooked add ground coconut masala paste and 1/2 cup water. Cook till done. Adjust salt. Add  more water if the gravy is too thick.Garnish with fresh cilantro and curry leaves. Serve with ghee rice, Bread , chappathi etc...

  8. That looks delicious vrinda.....That being said, i make it in a differnt way.....since we use sauteed coconut in this, we call it varutharacha kozhi curry.....You can check it @ mine...i add fennel seeds as well...:)

    BTW...loved teh pic....that paathram looks sooo good!!ente oru kannu athil undu ketto.
